Tips directly from RIM

Optimizing BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet Battery Life

To help optimize battery life of the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, here are a few things whenever you don't have access to a charger and need to maximize the life of the battery:

·         Dim the screen: Tap on the battery icon and adjust the brightness slider bar, or access the "Screen" setting within the Settings menu.

·         Enable a shorter Backlight Time-out & Standby Time-Out: Tap on the gear icon, then tap the "Screen" setting, and then specify a Backlight Time-Out value.

·         Turn off Wi-Fi® and/or Bluetooth® connectivity: Tap on the Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth icons followed by selecting "Off".

·         Pause apps when you show the home screen or switch between apps: Tap on the gear icon, then tap the "General" setting, and set "Application Behavior" to "Paused".

Managing App and Bookmark Icons

After installing some new apps and games and adding a few bookmarks to your tablet home screen, you might want to move these icons or remove them completely. For each of the following tips, when you are finished, tap on the checkmark that appears along the categories panel in the top left corner.

·          Moving an icon: Tap and hold an icon; when it starts to pulse, drag the icon to where you would like to place it.

·         Deleting an icon: To remove an icon completely, tap and hold the icon while in the "All" view , and then tap on the trash can icon that appears when the icon starts to pulse. An important thing to keep in mind if you remove an icon while in another view such as "Media", the icon will get removed from "Media" and still appear in the "All" view.

·         Note: To add a bookmark to your home screen, while browsing a website, tap on the "Star with a green plus sign" icon and then select "Add to Home Screen".

Managing Files

"How can I manage files located on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet?" To do this, you can use USB or Wi-Fi File Sharing, which will allow you to open, copy, or delete files that you've previously saved. For a detailed overview of how to use Wi-Fi File Sharing, check out our post on how to copy files to and from a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet using Wi-Fi Sharing.

How to find your #iPad or #iPhone

Image003

Forget where you put your iDevice?   This works for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

You can find it on a map

Display a message and make a sound – How about “Hey iPad, call me at xxxxxx”  Ha ha.

You can also force it to lock ( providing you have a passcode)

And last but not least, you can remote wipe!  Back to factory defaults. Yikes.

Don’t forget to do this FIRST:

Turn on “Find my xxxx”

·         Settings

·         ICloud

Find my iDevice uses Wi-Fi so if it is turned off or not connected you are out of luck!  Happy finding of your iDevice!

Balsillie and Lazaridis step down as RIM's CEO's. Good News!

I was hoping this would happen and have been saying that these two guys need to step down for the last year!  Thrilled today.  Though my thoughts were to have a super dynamic new person to replace them.  Not sure about the new CEO Thorsten Heins, the company's former chief operating officer,  I have never heard or seen him.  Your thoughts?

Privacy of your Data

Have you ever wondered what the rules are for Canadians and having their data somewhere else?  Do you even know where you data is stored? Hmmmmm….  I asked a lawyer and here is what he said:

The problem here involves the obligations American companies have under the US Patriot Act to divulge information to the government upon request and without notifying the person involved. These requirements conflict with obligations under Canadian privacy legislation. At the very least it requires a very clear Privacy Policy on the Web site saying that a user's information is not private. If the company is not a Web company but some other kind of company and it is storing other kinds of information—e.g. a hospital storing patient information, an accountant storing client information, or a law firm storing client information—I would say that they could be negligent in so doing.

There are plenty of nice Canadian places to store your data. I advise people to use them and avoid this highly avoidable risk.

Which phone is right for you? BB or iPhone or Android

Interesting article by www.mycellmyterms.com on how to choose a smartphone.

The one thing he doesn’t mention that I think is important is that BlackBerry compresses data so when travelling it will save you a whack of money!

What do you think?

Are you concerned where your personal information is stored?

Is the cloud scary?  Fantastic article below

More companies in Canada are turning to the cloud — or, at least, thinking about it — for flexibility, agility and cost savings. But there is often the perception that using cloud-computing services could compromise corporate and customer data, or may even be against the law.

But there’s no law that prevents most Canadian businesses from exporting personal information, said David Fraser, partner with McInnis Cooper, president of the Canadian IT Law Association and chair of the National Privacy and Access Law Section of the Canadian Bar Association.
